Marijuana Fights Brain Cancer And Reduces Tumors?

A new Cancer study was conducted and there’s good news for pot activists.  The study found that when radiation is combined with marijuana use, it is nearly impossible for brain tumors to grow.

Researchers at St George’s, University of London, had been looking into methods to improve the treatment of brain cancer tumors.  Brain tumors are responsible for the deaths of around 5,200 people each and every year.  The survival rate is equally grim at a measly 10 percent in five years after diagnosis.

Researchers combined cannabinoids THC and cannabidiol CBD with radiation therapy, and tested the results on mice.

The results were incredible.  The tumors that were given the radiation therapy combined with THC and CBD had their tumors shrink dramatically or stop growing all together.

In fact, fifty percent of the cancer cells were destroyed and resulted in nearly ZERO side effects.

Dr. Wai Liu, the lead researcher told Science Daily,

The results are extremely exciting. Those treated with both irradiation and the cannabinoids saw the most beneficial results and a drastic reduction in size. In some cases, the tumors effectively disappeared in the animals. This augurs well for further research in humans in the future.

So why do cannabidnoids do so well in fighting cancer cells? Dr. Liu explained to Medical Daily,

We think that the cannabinoids are hitting a number of cell signaling pathways, which primes them to the effects of irradiation. Pre-treatment with the cannabinoids seems to interfere with the ability of the tumor cell to repair the DNA-damaging effects of irradiation.

This is huge because brain cancer cells are almost impossible to kill.  However, the study showed that these tumor cells get erased due to their sensitivity to the radiation.
